How airline carry-on rules work

Carry-on bags have to fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you. The size limit is commonly around 56×36×23 cm (22×14×9 in), but it varies by airline — and budget carriers are the strictest, both on size and on weight.

Anything over the limit gets checked, often with a fee at the gate. Certain items are also restricted regardless of bag size: hazardous materials, sharp objects, and liquids or gels over 100 ml / 3.4 oz (which must go in a clear, resealable bag).

The reliable move is to pick a bag that fits the airlines you actually fly, then pack light enough to stay under the weight limit. That's what this whole site is for.
